Why visit San Francisco

San Francisco is compact, dramatic, and neighborhood-rich, with steep streets, bay views, Victorian houses, food culture, parks, tech history, and quick access to coastal nature.

Best time to visit: Late summer and early autumn are often the clearest and mildest months, while spring is pleasant and less crowded. Bring layers year-round because fog and wind can change the feel quickly.

  • See the Golden Gate Bridge, Presidio, Crissy Field, and nearby bay viewpoints
  • Ride a cable car and explore Chinatown, North Beach, Nob Hill, and the waterfront
  • Visit Alcatraz, the Ferry Building, and major museums
  • Walk Golden Gate Park, Lands End, and neighborhood stairways or viewpoints
  • Eat through the Mission, Richmond, Sunset, Hayes Valley, and other dining districts

Getting around: Muni, BART, cable cars, ferries, walking, and rideshare cover most visitor needs. Driving inside the city is often slower and parking can be expensive.

Local tip: Pack layers even in summer, and plan routes with hills in mind; a short distance can be a real climb in San Francisco.
