8 ways to travel lighter

Proven techniques that actually move the needle.

1

Roll, don't fold

Rolls remove air from clothes and save roughly 15% of space — and less bulk means less weight you'll feel.

2

Wear your heaviest items on the plane

Jeans, boots, and a jacket worn on board don't count toward your bag weight — and they're never the most comfortable to pack.

3

Decant liquids into 30–50ml containers

A full bottle of shampoo is 200–300g. A 30ml travel bottle is 30g and lasts most trips. Buy refills at your destination.

4

Leave 'just in case' items at home

You can buy almost anything abroad, often cheaper. If you've packed it 'in case,' ask yourself when you last used it on a trip.

5

Choose merino wool over cotton

Merino can be worn 3× before washing, dries fast, and weighs less per wear-cycle. One shirt does the work of three.

6

One versatile pair of shoes beats three specialized ones

A neutral-coloured sneaker or walking shoe handles 90% of travel situations. Dress shoes and hiking boots add 1–2kg.

7

Post large gifts home, don't carry them

Souvenirs and gifts can be posted as a parcel for less than most airline overweight fees. Ship and forget.

8

Go digital with documents

Boarding passes, hotel confirmations, travel insurance — all on your phone. A printed backup folder adds 100–200g.
