The document copies strategy

Losing your passport abroad is one of travel's worst experiences — but having copies makes recovery dramatically easier. Use at least 3 of these 5 methods.

📧 Email yourself

Scan or photo every document and email to yourself. Accessible from any device worldwide without needing your own phone.

Passport validity — the 6-month rule

Many countries require your passport to be valid for at least 6 months beyond your return date — not just your travel dates.
Airlines also enforce this at check-in and may deny boarding. Check your passport's expiry date before booking, not before travelling.
Countries with strict 6-month requirements: USA, most of Asia, Middle East, Africa, and Schengen.
Countries accepting 3-month validity: Most EU countries for EU passport holders. Always verify current rules before travel.

Country-specific requirements

These destinations have specific documentation requirements beyond a standard passport.

Document security best practices

🔒 Use a money belt for essentials

Keep your passport and backup card against your body in busy tourist areas. RFID-blocking wallets protect against digital skimming.

🏨 Safe in your accommodation

Use the hotel room safe for passport when sightseeing. Carry a photocopy on you during the day — many countries allow copies for street ID.

👀 Never flash your passport unnecessarily

Only show it when required (borders, banks, official check-ins). Avoid taking it out in crowded public spaces.

📵 Beware of fake police checks

In some cities, scammers pose as police and ask to 'check' your passport. Real police don't do this. Offer to walk to a police station if pressed.

📋 Register with your embassy

Many countries offer free registration systems (US: STEP; UK: FCDO Registration; AU: Smartraveller). They can contact you in emergencies.

🧳 Split documents across bags

Never keep passport AND wallet AND phone all in the same bag. If one bag is stolen, you haven't lost everything.

If your documents are lost or stolen

Stay calm. Having copies makes this manageable. Click each document type for step-by-step recovery instructions.

Pro tips from frequent travelers

  • Write your name, nationality, and hotel address inside your passport cover in case it's found.
  • Photograph your luggage before checking it — serial numbers and description useful for lost luggage claims.
  • Keep a $50 note hidden separately from your wallet as a last-resort emergency fund.
  • Memorize one phone number: a family member you could call from a stranger's phone.
  • If your passport is damaged (water, torn), replace it before traveling — damaged passports are sometimes refused at borders.
  • Extra passport photos (2×2 inch / 35×45mm) solve a surprising number of problems abroad.
