EUR 3–12 per person per night by accommodation category, charged for every night of a hotel stay. Hotels run EUR 3 (1-star), 4 (2-star), 7 (3-star), 10 (4-star) and 12 (5-star); campsites and youth hostels are EUR 3, and a B&B, inn, guesthouse, holiday apartment or short let is a flat EUR 9.50 — which makes a cheap short let dearer per night than a 3-star hotel. Unlike Rome and Venice there is NO night cap in a hotel: the 14-night cut-off applies only to residences, holiday homes and holiday apartments, and the count restarts if the stay is broken. Under-18s pay nothing, as do under-30s in youth hostels, students up to 26 enrolled at a Milanese university, and disabled travellers with their companions. These rates replaced a different 2026 set on 1 April — the 1 January table charged more for 1 to 3-star hotels (EUR 4, 5 and 7.40) and less for 5-star (EUR 10) — so a quote from early 2026 will not match.

EUR 1.50 to 5.00 per person per night, set by the accommodation’s official classification rather than by what you pay: hotels run EUR 1.50 at 1-star to 5.00 at 5-star and 5-star luxury, open-air sites the same, agriturismi are graded in girasoli (sunflowers) from 1.50 to 5.00, and extra-hotel places are graded in leoni alati (winged lions), the Veneto system, from 2.00 at two lions to 5.00 at five. Somewhere unclassified with no guest services pays a flat 3.50. ONLY FOUR NIGHTS ARE CHARGED per person per month, the tightest night cap of the Italian cities here — Rome charges ten and Venice five — and it still applies to a stay of up to 30 consecutive days that spans two months or several addresses. Under-15s pay nothing at all — the exemption runs to the day before the 15th birthday. Three groups then pay 20% less, and the reductions do not stack: guests over 70, anyone from their 15th birthday to the day before their 26th, and members of a single booking for a group of more than 25. There is a long list of other exemptions, including hospital patients and one companion, coach drivers and one escort per 25 passengers, and students in E.S.U. halls. A short-let operator can instead agree to pay 7% of the room or apartment price net of VAT, capped at EUR 5 a person a night, but only under a signed convention with the city.

EUR 0.10–5 per person per night, capped at 5 consecutive nights. A hotel in the historic centre in high season runs EUR 1 (1-star) to EUR 5 (5-star); campsites start at EUR 0.10. The Lido and lagoon islands pay 20% less (10% less for 5-star hotels) and the mainland 30% less, and low season — 1 to 31 January — is 30% below the base. Children under 10 are exempt, as are Venice residents, patients in local rehabilitation care and one companion each. A 50% reduced tariff also exists, but the published brochure does not say who qualifies for it, so we do not apply it. Venice's separate day-tripper access fee is a different charge that does not apply to guests staying overnight.

Venice, Amsterdam, and Barcelona are using tourist taxes to manage visitor numbers and fund infrastructure repair. Amsterdam charges 12.5% of the room price — the steepest rate in Europe, and a share rather than a flat fee, so it climbs with the price of your hotel. Barcelona hit 40 million visitors/year with a population of 1.6 million.
Bhutan's Sustainable Development Fee ($100–200/day) funds forest conservation and free healthcare/education for citizens. Rwanda's $1,500 gorilla permit directly funds mountain gorilla protection — the population has grown from 620 to 1,000+ since 2004. Higher prices = better conservation outcomes.
The UK's ETA (2024) and New Zealand's NZeTA join the US ESTA in creating pre-arrival fee systems for visa-waiver nationalities. The EU's ETIAS launches in 2025 — €7 for 3 years, covering 30 Schengen countries. These are not visas, but they cost money and must be arranged in advance.
Add 10–15% to your accommodation budget for tourist taxes in European cities. For adventure travel (gorilla trekking, Galápagos, Machu Picchu), the permit/entry fees can equal or exceed your flights. Always research before booking — some permits (Inca Trail, gorilla trekking) sell out months in advance.
