What Switzerland charges

Geneva

CHF 4.25 per person per night

CHF 4.25 per person per night — and Geneva is the city in this list most likely to catch a family out, because it charges CHILDREN. The canton states the tax is owed by guests whether they are of age or minors, so four people in a room means four charges. Most of Europe does the opposite: Prague exempts under-18s, Lisbon under-13s, Ljubljana under-7s. There is no star-rating ladder either, just one rate for every class of hotel, with campsites at CHF 2.50. Two things to watch. The amount is fixed by regulation inside a band the tourism law sets at CHF 3.50 to 5, so it can move without any change to the law — it was CHF 3.75 as recently as May 2025, which means any figure below CHF 4 is out of date. And you owe it only if your tax domicile is outside Geneva. The exemption worth knowing is for guests whose accommodation is paid for as a social or assistance benefit; separately, owners and long-term tenants of second homes, holiday lets or campsite pitches pay a CHF 60 annual flat rate instead of the nightly charge.

Read at source: République et canton de Genève — Règlement d'application de la loi sur le tourisme (RTour, I 1 60.01) art. 10 al. 1, 'tarif unique 4,25 fr.' with campsites at 2,50 fr., consolidated text current to 27 February 2026 (silgeneve.ch); amount and the liability of minors ('majeurs ou mineurs') confirmed on the canton's taxes touristiques page, updated 4 May 2026 (ge.ch/taxes-touristiques/taxe-sejour), under the loi sur le tourisme (LTour) which sets the permitted band at 3.50-5 fr. Note the ge.ch page cites RTour art. 16 for the amounts while the consolidated text places them at art. 10. · checked 2026-10-09

Why Tourist Taxes Have Exploded

The Overtourism Response

Venice, Amsterdam, and Barcelona are using tourist taxes to manage visitor numbers and fund infrastructure repair. Amsterdam charges 12.5% of the room price — the steepest rate in Europe, and a share rather than a flat fee, so it climbs with the price of your hotel. Barcelona hit 40 million visitors/year with a population of 1.6 million.

Conservation Funding

Bhutan's Sustainable Development Fee ($100–200/day) funds forest conservation and free healthcare/education for citizens. Rwanda's $1,500 gorilla permit directly funds mountain gorilla protection — the population has grown from 620 to 1,000+ since 2004. Higher prices = better conservation outcomes.

New Entry Authorizations

The UK's ETA (2024) and New Zealand's NZeTA join the US ESTA in creating pre-arrival fee systems for visa-waiver nationalities. The EU's ETIAS launches in 2025 — €7 for 3 years, covering 30 Schengen countries. These are not visas, but they cost money and must be arranged in advance.

Budget Planning Rule

Add 10–15% to your accommodation budget for tourist taxes in European cities. For adventure travel (gorilla trekking, Galápagos, Machu Picchu), the permit/entry fees can equal or exceed your flights. Always research before booking — some permits (Inca Trail, gorilla trekking) sell out months in advance.

Highest-Fee Destinations to Budget For

  • Bhutan: $100–200/person/day government fee — mandatory for all visits
  • Rwanda gorilla trekking: $1,500/person per trek (non-negotiable, all goes to conservation)
  • Uganda gorilla trekking: $700/person — book 6+ months ahead, permit numbers strictly limited
  • Galápagos Islands: $200 entry + $20 transit card on top of Ecuador visa
  • Masai Mara (peak season): $200/person per day, Jul–Oct Great Migration period
  • Amsterdam: 12.5% of the room price — about €175 on a €200/night room for 7 nights, charged per room rather than per person
